Background

The Berlin wall was built in 1961 and separated West Berlin from the East. Families were split living a completely different life in the two parts of the city. The Eastern part was dominated by a strict government marked by socialism. The ruling party controlled everything from the kid’s choice of schools to the choice of apartments and even working choice. Everything and everyone was even which suppressed the formation of individualism. In 1957 already, many prefabricated high rises were built which were rather practical then visually appealing. The grey, sad buildings became a symbol of a failed government. Most of the buildings were deconstructed but some had beautiful graffiti and therefore were preserved. Today the Berlin wall is coloured with many graffiti artworks expressing people’s feelings, asking for change. Of course, the country is united again but the society is continuously confronted with new challenges. As RALLY customers are women, the collection has addressed different problems women are facing. The brand is supporting the feministic movement asking for equality between women and men. Furthermore, the brand is confronting the problems of the fast-fashion industry. Mainly women are working in the production facilities. Not only the wages are low but also the working conditions are often insufficient and against the human rights.
Whereas the first drop is colourful representing the freedom of the Western part of the country, the second drop is dominated by black, white and grey, together with red which represents the communism. Of course, Eastern Berlin was not all colourful and happy but the citizens did have the possibility to protest and express their opinion. Many riots have taken place around the seventies and were about cultural topics such as the acceptance of homosexuality or of political nature such as the demonstration against the Shah of Iraq. In our collection, we have reawakened the spirit of the 70s- loud, political and expressive. The fashion style of the 70s is also visible in our garments, giving the collection a slightly retro look.
Both collections can, of course, be combined as they complement each other. However, the second drop’s majority is rather minimalistic making it perfect for a professional appearance.
